August permit numbers up 5% from July of 2026; up 11% from August of 2025; even for first eight months of 2026

INDIANAPOLIS, IN, UNITED STATES, September 29, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The U.S. Census Bureau recently released statewide totals for building permits issued in August and shows 1,891 single-family permits were pulled. The 1,891 permits pulled in August of 2026 are up 5% from the 1,797 permits pulled in July of 2026. This number is up 11% from August of 2025, when 1,711 permits were pulled. The single-family permit numbers (13,790) for 2026 are nearly identical compared to the first eight months of 2025 (13,796).

“August’s permit numbers are an encouraging sign, with single-family permits increasing both month-over-month and 11% compared to last August,” said IBA CEO Rick Wajda. “While year-to-date activity remains nearly identical to 2025, the continued demand for new housing reinforces the importance of creating an environment where builders can increase supply. IBA remains focused on reducing regulatory barriers, supporting housing affordability and ensuring Hoosiers have access to more housing options across the state.”

Indiana leads the Midwest in single-family housing activity. With 1,891 single-family permits issued in August, the state outpaced neighboring Ohio (1,495), Michigan (1,429), Illinois (962), and Kentucky (793).
